The wild horses in the Danube Delta

Historical documents prove that the ancestors of today’s horse population in the Danube delta were brought there by the Tartars 300 to 400 years ago, became indigenous there and became more and more wild.

In the north-eastern delta (Tulcea County), between the arms of the Chilia and Sulina rivers, there is also the village and forest of Letea (Pădurea Letea in Romanian), which covers an area of over 5,000 hectares (50,000,000 m2). It is the northernmost subtropical forest in Europe, the oldest nature reserve in Romania and the habitat of these horses.
